Bowfisherman Wrestles Record Catfish from a Creek

Codie Carlson had simply gotten off work from his airport job south of Detroit, Michigan. It was about midnight, and he determined to stroll alongside close by Plum Creek to bowfish.

“My girlfriend Shelby Philipski wished me to go so I might do one thing enjoyable after work,” Carlson tells Out of doors Life. “I used to be strolling alongside the creek, and I noticed a tail wave out of the water. I’ve a flashlight on my bow, and noticed its mouth and whiskers, so I knew it was a catfish.”

The 34-year-old archer drew his bow, aimed on the fish 18 yards away, and launched. When the arrow struck the fish, gallons of water sloshed out of the creek.

“Hell, yeah, dinner!” Carlson yelled, pondering it was channel catfish.

His arrow handed by the fish, and along with his flashlight he might see it take off down the creek. It wasn’t lengthy earlier than the fish spooled him, taking all the road off his bow reel. So, Carlson dropped his bow, grabbed the road with the catfish nonetheless hooked up and chased it down the financial institution.

“It bumped into some thick lily pads, and I believed my arrow had pulled out,” Carlson says. “The water is muddy, and I couldn’t see the fish … I gave the road some slack and it got here up out of the pads 12 ft away out within the water.”

In his flashlight beam, Carlson might see that his arrow was simply barely holding the cat – with the arrowhead barely below its robust pores and skin. He panicked and jumped into the creek to seize it.

“I’m 6 ft, 4 inches, and in my full work garments and boots. And after I obtained the fish by its mouth, I used to be as much as my belt in water,” Carlson explains. “However I had him. He fought me a couple of instances as I used to be grabbing him, and he chomped down on my arms. However I wrestled him out of the water and onto a close-by roadway.”

Carlson says he dropped to his knees and began screaming with pleasure when he noticed how large the catfish was. He then realized it was a flathead, and never a channel cat.

“I used to be freaking out on the creek financial institution, and I needed to name Shelby to inform her.”

He thought the fish could also be a state report and rapidly walked with the flathead to his close by truck, the place he had a scale to weigh it. The dimensions maxed out at 50 kilos, and Carlson knew he needed to get it weighed on licensed scales for it to be an official Michigan report.

At the moment of evening, there was nowhere open the place he might weigh the fish. Carlson used a Muzzy compound bow and a two-prong AMS fiberglass arrow to take his fish, which has simply been accepted by the Michigan DNR as the brand new state-record flathead. It simply tops the earlier report of 49 kilos, 12.96 ounces, which was taken from the Maple River in June 2012 by Rodney Akey. Apparently, Michigan doesn’t separate its fishing records in keeping with the tactic used, as many different states do, which suggests bowfishermen and rod-and-reel anglers are competing for a similar information.

A DNR biologist checked and confirmed that the fish was a flathead, and Carlson says they’ll be checking for its age subsequent.

“I truthfully didn’t know flathead catfish had been in that creek,” says Carlson, who plans to have a duplicate mount manufactured from his fish. “I simply wished one thing for dinner, and I’m gonna eat my report fish, too.”
